About Muktuk Adventures

Muktuk Adventures is owned and operated by Frank Turner and Anne Taylor. Their husky dog kennels are located on the Takhini River, close to the Old Dawson Trail, the Takhini Hotsprings and the Yukon Quest Trail.

At Muktk we specialize in small group adventures for both novice and experienced mushers (dog-sled drivers).

What people says about Muktuk Adventures

Frank Turner with some of his dogsFrank named his kennel Muktuk because his friend Victor Kisoun of Inuvik brought him some muktuk for the dogs. Muktuk is an outer layer of fat found in the whales hunted along the arctic shores of Alaska, the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

The ranch is surrounded by panoramic views of the mountains in the Ibex Valley, the Laberge Hills and Haeckel Hill. Nestled into an ox-bow on the river, the 100-acre ranch is bordered on three sides by the river. This location is ideal for mushing in the winter, and for canoeing and swimming in the summer.

The main building is located near the river with a cedar sauna tucked in behind it. Guests join Frank, Anne and their staff at Muktuk for meals in the main lodge.

The home is built with Sitka spruce logs from Haines, Alaska.

All the mushing (dog sledding) gear is located in the Dog Room.

This is a view of the dog yard at sunset taken from the Muktuk lodge. The dogs are kenneled very close to the main lodge so that the Muktuk team can make sure the dogs are always well cared for and they know straight away if there are any problems. Most of the time the dogs are very quiet, but they always get excited at dinner time and when a team hooks up for a ride.

Frank and his crew provide expert mushing instruction and guiding to guests and Frank shares some of the secrets of running competitively in the Yukon Quest. Visitors also learn about canine nutrition and care.
