Manuela Albicker was born in Germany, south of the Black Forest near the Swiss Border in a town called Sumpfohren.
Once leaving School she did a carpentry apprenticeship, still unusual for a girl to do in Germany.
It was always a childhood dream of Manuela’s to come to Canada so she decided to take the plunge and leave Germany.
She arrived in Vancouver then on to Whistler where she stayed for 8 months working on the front desk of a hotel. She learned English quickly and with a yearning for adventure decided to head for the Yukon to discover Canada’s wilderness.
She found work quickly as a carpenter at Muktuk Kennels; there she got to know Yukon Quest legend Frank Turner and the art of dog-sledding. From here her calling in life was clear and, with Frank’s guidance, became a reality.
Her love for the dogs is exemplified by the way she cares for them and in return the way they run for her. With a young team and musher the future is very bright for this budding young musher from Sumpfohren.
