Packing List For Muktuk Adventures

We can help you with parkas and bunny boots, but you will want to bring your own "next-to-the-skin layer (long underwear, face protection, socks, gloves), and the mid-layer (fleece pants and top, wool sweaters, etc.). The musher riding off into the dusk is wearing a good parka, insulated snow pants and the ever-fashionable bunny boots.

The key to dressing in our cold, dry climate is layers. You will need to add and remove a layer or two every day, so make sure you bring lots of options for a layering system.

We used to use synthetics, but now stick almost exclusively to natural fibres: merino wool for hands, feet and all over. Merino wool has natural properties that excel over any of the synthetic fabrics that claim to "wick".

Clothing
  • pairs of close fitting gloves (marino wool, thinsulite, polar fleece);
  • 2 pairs long underwear (top & bottom – silk and/or marino wool; please avoid synthetics like polypropolene);
  • 2 pairs long pants (wool, fleece);
  • 1 pair insulated coveralls or ski pants (we do have some on hand);
  • 2 warm wool sweaters or polar fleece tops;
  • 4 to 6 pairs heavy weight wool socks and 2 pairs lightweight marino wool socks (Note: you can never have too many socks);
  • Sweatpants & sweatshirt for sleeping (not cotton); and
  • Insulated boots for the yard; we will provide sub-zero boots for trips.
Mushing Essentials For Your Face
    Warm hat or toque (wool, polar fleece, fur);
  • Balaclava or face mask (essential; neoprene is a good option);
  • Sunglasses and/or goggles (if you wear glasses or contacts, goggles are very useful in extreme cold);
  • Sun screen, lip balm, hand and body lotion;
  • You can see, some people go to great lengths to protect their face!
Personal Items
    Pocket knife;
  • Flashlight (small) and headlamp;
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, towel, and medications;
  • Camera and film (extra batteries, if kept under your parka will stay warm and keep the camera functional); and
  • Personal medication and a copy of any prescription you might need filled, along with contact information for your doctor or HMO
Document Reminder
Please remember to bring
  • A copy of travel insurance or other policies that provide coverage while you travel; and
  • Your passport and photo ID Please ensure that you have an up-to-date machine-readable passport (with a bar code for scanning).
