Mushers College
|
| |
| In Mushers College, you can further develop your
skills and test your abilities and limits. To date, Muktuk guests
have gone on to do solo camping trips, longer expeditions, even
mid-distance races. You will begin with one or two day trips
starting from our base camp at Takhini Oxbow River Ranch.
Then you can head out for longer trips: a 4-day camping loop;
an 8- or 10-day Quest Trail trip; or a longer expedition.
For the advanced musher, who has previous experience mushing,
our kennel provides exceptional opportunities to explore this
winter sport. Our dogs are raised mainly as Yukon Quest racing
dogs. But only the best dogs are selected to show their abilities
in the actual race.
Our other dogs work with visitors, so guests usually have
at least one or two dogs in their team who have been in one
or more previous Quests. They are still very strong and well
trained, and used to listening to commands.

| Depending on weather conditions, you may experience
the thrill of travelling at night by moonlight, or you
may travel with a headlamp. You will camp in the wilderness
with or without a tent, and you will practice caring for
your dog team in remote conditions.
You will have plenty of opportunities to learn more
about good dog care for mid- and long-distance racing,
and to learn about motivating a dog team. |
