Dogs First!

At Muktuk Kennels, we have a very strict Dogs First! Policy. Safety and excellent dog care are our top priorities. Consequently we do not push the dogs beyond what they enjoy. Also, we do not rush rookie mushers, and prefer that people advance at a slow and steady pace.

We will meet you at the airport (or your hotel) and bring you out to the kennel. Once here you will meet our very friendly huskies, especially your team, and help with the evening feeding. Then you can spend the rest of the evening getting to know your guide, along with the history of our dogs and the Yukon Quest. Settle into your cozy cabin.

Start the day by helping with the morning feed and seeing the Quest dogs off on their training run. Then you will get your orientation to the fine art of driving a dog sled. Our dogs are very powerful – probably the strongest dogs in the Quest pound for pound – and you will get to see and feel that power in action as you head out on your first run. You will drive along the Takhini or Yukon Rivers with your guide. Today you will learn how to harness your team, how to "boot up" the team, how to brake, how to balance and steer the sled on corners, and other basics of driving your team.

Today you'll try a slightly longer run, along our woodland trails or the Takhini River, running up to the Dawson Trail, an historic wagon trail route from the Gold Rush days. The Dawson Trail meanders across all sorts of terrain and through spectacular landscape.

Like people, dogs prefer variety, and need to have rest occasionally. So you will either do a shorter run on a different trail, or let the dogs take a "day off." You can care for the dogs in the yard, then head out to experience some of the other wonderful adventures the Yukon has to offer. Ice-fishing, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling await your exploration. You can also visit a couple of our local museums.

Today you head out on an overnight run to a nearby secluded lake. You will have a chance to see the dogs work with a loaded sled, and experience the joys of traveling through the wilderness with your team. When you set up camp, you will feed and care for the dogs much as mushers in long distance races do. Then you will enjoy a fine meal prepared by your guide, before you snuggle into a cozy Arctic Oven tent. As you drift off to sleep under the shimmering aurora borealis, you will probably hear the haunting howls of your K-9 companions - and if you're lucky, the answering song of the wolf.

After a hearty breakfast for you and your team, you can spend part of the day exploring or ice-fishing, before driving your team back to home base. When you finally return, you can end the day with a relaxing break in our splendid cedar sauna. At the final dinner, you will receive your Rookie mushing certificate.

After breakfast, you will head to the airport for your departure, or go into Whitehorse if you are extending your stay in the Yukon. By the time you leave our ranch, you will have many new K-9 friends, and you will be ready to tackle a longer camping trip through the magnificent Yukon wilderness.
