| 6th Official Checkpoint, 785
miles into race |
| |
| As the first six teams made their way to Central, the second
group of mushers started to arrive at 16:30. Frank arrived first,
at 16:30. Ed Hopkins followed at 16:50, and John Schandelmeier
was right behind him at 16:53. Peter Ledwidge arrived later
on, at 18:17, and Dan Kaduce arrived 19:01. That left only two
teams still on the trail into Circle. Please see below for some
photos taken in Circle. Sebastien Schnuelle returned to Circle
about an hour after leaving at 17:22. His dogs are sick and
have diarrhea, so he returned to see if he could get the problem
settled down.
The checkpoint is waiting for the last three mushers, Freking,
Kaduce and Baureis. They should all be in over the next fours
hours. Bruno Baureis is down to nine dogs, which may slow
him down a bit, as he is a really big guy (6' 5"). He
and Frank were travelling together before Dawson, and joking
about some common points in their backgrounds (Toronto). They
jokingly began to refer to each other as twins, separated
at birth. Now the vets have taken to calling Frank "Danny."
No word on whether or not they are calling Bruno "Arnold."
There’s a great story about Frank in the Fairbanks
paper, the News-Miner, this morning. Here is the link:

Incidentally, Slaven's is not an official checkpoint, so teams
are not required to sign in or out, but it does serve as a
dog drop. Parks staff run the operation at Slaven's and do
a great job of supporting the mushers and reporting times
to the race headquarters. The Parks staff who go into Slaven's
for the Quest do so on their own time and using their own
resources - they deserve a lot of thanks for their efforts.
Maybe we should try the same model for Scroggie Creek! The
noon report is now at the bottom of this page |
